Environmental Impact

Food waste is a major environmental issue, with significant consequences for our planet:

  • When food decomposes in landfills, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide
  • The resources used to produce wasted food—water, land, energy, labor, and capital—are also wasted
  • In the U.S. alone, food waste generates the equivalent of 37 million cars' worth of greenhouse gas emissions

By rescuing surplus food and transforming it into pet meals, Leftover Love is helping to reduce these environmental impacts while addressing pet hunger.

Environmental impact of food waste

Beyond helping pets and their families, our food rescue efforts have a significant positive impact on the environment:

  • 75,000 pounds of food diverted from landfills
  • 37.5 tons of greenhouse gas emissions prevented
  • 1.8 million gallons of water saved that would have been wasted in food production
  • 450 acres of land use impact reduced

When food decomposes in landfills, it produces methane—a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than CO2. By rescuing food, we're helping combat climate change while feeding pets in need.
